What does copyright protect?

Copyright protects original works of authorship, including literary, musical, artistic, and dramatic works. This protection covers the expression of ideas, such as written text, music, films, software, and architectural designs. It does not protect the underlying ideas or concepts, but rather the way those ideas are expressed. Copyright gives the creator exclusive rights to reproduce, distribute, perform, and display their work.
